Cold Weather Survival Tips: Staying Warm During Power Outages

This information is being shared for winter weather preparedness purposes only and is intended to provide general survival tips in the event of a power outage.

With colder temperatures expected, residents are encouraged to plan ahead and take simple steps to stay warm and safe should power interruptions occur.

*Body Heat*
Dress in layers, cover your head, hands, and feet, and use blankets to trap warmth. If safe, gather together to share body heat.

*One Room Rule*
Choose one room for everyone to gather. Block doorways with blankets or towels, and remember that lower floors tend to stay warmer.

*Fuel Your Body*
Eat warm foods and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Warm or hot beverages can help raise body temperature. Avoid alcohol, as it increases heat loss.

*Heat Sources*
Use fireplaces (with the damper open) or indoor-rated heaters only, and ensure proper ventilation. Never use grills, ovens, or camp stoves indoors. Make sure carbon monoxide detectors are working.

*Seal It Up*
Place towels under doors, cover windows with blankets, and close curtains to block cold air.

*Emergency Only*
If using a vehicle for warmth, run it outdoors only — never in a garage or enclosed space! Limit use to 10–15 minutes per hour and keep exhaust pipes clear.

Please continue to monitor local news forecasts and City communications for updates. Preparing now can help keep you and your family safe during cold weather conditions.
