Veterans Memorial Park

On November 11, 2018, Lago Vista residents gathered together for the rededication of the Lago Vista Veterans Memorial Park.

Lago Vista's Veterans Memorial Park, located at the corner of Dawn Drive and Thunderbird Street near City Hall, was originally established in 1999. The names of donors for the original park are depicted in engraved bricks.

In 2002, a gazebo was added to the park courtesy of the Keep Lago Vista Beautiful memorial

In 2017, the City identified the need to record additional names of veterans who may have lived in Lago Vista or been associated with someone that wished to honor a veteran. Former Councilman Dick Bohn was the main proponent of achieving this goal. This idea led to a plan to completely refurbish the existing park

The refurbished park now contains a new gazebo with a 5-pointed star and flags of the five branches of military service. The park also features the Path Of Honor containing engraved bricks with the names of newly honored veterans. The Path of Honor is guarded by five granite totems representing soldiers from each branch of service. The pathway is set under the ever-vigilant watch of a great Bald Eagle, a sculpture by area artist Marley Porter titled "Axis of Freedom."

More than 400 residents attended the opening ceremonies of the new park. Special recognition was given for all service members (and surviving spouses) who are or were the recipients of the following: Medal of Honor, Prisoner of War, and Purple Heart. As part of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, which coincided with the opening of the new park, a special recognition service was given for each of the Vietnam veterans present at the ceremony or who lost their lives in action.

We applaud the tireless efforts of all veterans as well as their families and loved ones. We also thank the City Council that embraced the need to honor our veterans by funding this project in the CIP for 2016 to 2017 to refurbish the park. Many thanks to our former City Managers (Melissa Vossmer and Kenneth Renneau) and City staff who assisted in bringing this project to fruition. And finally, we thank the organizations and individuals who generously supported the new Veterans Memorial Park.
